The artwork, Riding the Thermocline, Fragments in Time, Circa 2900, incorporates fragments of marine rope debris collected from the remote Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, specifically the southwest coast of lutruwita/Tasmania, Toogee Country. These remnants, originally part of Jess Leitmanis' sculpture work Clock of Visibility: Bleaching Part 1, have been embedded directly onto the foam using bio-resin and glassed over — making this surfboard a vessel of both performance and meaning.
Jess Leitmanis, an Australian artist and environmentalist, creates work that explores the intersections of ocean health, time, and human impact. Through her sculptures, installations, and found-object works, she brings attention to marine debris and the stories carried by the ocean.
